Luxury Hotels in Oxford

Illustration of the Randolph Hotel, Oxford

If you want to make your visit to Oxford extra special, it is best to book some luxury accommodation. Oxford used to only have one luxury hotel to speak of, The Randolph, but things have imporved in recent years and Oxford now has plenty of luxurious hotels located in the heart of the city including the award winning prison hotel run by Mal Maison. Oxford's most popular luxury hotels start with the famous Randolph closely followed by the less central Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons but a new favourite has recently arrived on Oxford's luxury hotel scene, in the form of Mal Maison, Oxford Castle. This is a strange nomination for one of the best hotels in Oxford because it was formerly a prison, but it has been transformed in to an award winning luxury hotel maintaining many of the original features - worth a visit even if you dont stay there! Our recommended best hotels are listed below based on local knowledge and feedback, we hope you agree!

The Randolph is one of Oxford's leading hotels - The Macdonald Randolph Hotel is situated in the heart of the city opposite the famous Ashmolean Museum which has recently completed a 65 million pound refit. The Randolph was built in 1864 in a Gothic architectural style and has recently been refurbished, the hotel offers the highest level of comfort and service in a traditional and welcoming environment. The location makes the Macdonald Randolph Hotel an ideal base for exploring the historic sights of Oxford or the thriving shopping centre just two minutes walk away.

The Randoph was one Oxfords only top rated hotels but now faces competition from the Old Parsonage Hotel and the more trendy boutique style Mal Maison hotel in the new Oxford Castle development.

The Old Parsonage is conveniently located a short walk from the city centre and less than an hour from London, which makes it feel like a countryside retreat despite its urban location. A real fire burns in the warm lobby all year round, the decor, traditional meets modern best describes the Parsonage. 30 recently refurbished rooms situated over 2 floors around a herb and lavender planted roof garden provide luxury accommodation.

The Parsonage Bar Restaurant has the intimate appeal of a private members club and is open from breakfast to 10.30pm serving modern British classics, its emphasis on fresh local ingredients. Whether its the simplicity of a good steak and chips, stunning seafood imported from Jersey or a lobster salad in summer, you will be guaranteed great quality food and service.

From July to the end of September there is a nightly barbeque on the front terrace, with live jazz all year round every Friday evening between 8-10pm. The hotel prides itself on using local suppliers where possible, fish and shellfish from Jersey, meat and vegetables from our owners farm in Oxfordshire and cheese from a local supplier. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner or just a drink and a snack at the Old Parsonage.

Parking for hotel guests is limited but there is ample parking in nearby Keble Road and St. Giles.

Photo of Mal Maison Oxford Castle
The Oxford Malmaison hotel is a truly spectacular boutique hotel which has won many awards. What makes this hotel so special is that it has been converted from a prison, but has managed to keep many of the unusual original features. Guests reside in the former cells of the prison, although as they are quite small three have been joined to make a larger room and ensuite bathroom.

There is also a central open plan cast iron walk way spanning several floors that was originally used for parades. The old prison is also famed for its use in a classic British comedy television series called porridge which was based at the former prison.

If you are looking for truely unique boutique hotel in Oxford this is the one for you. As boutique hotels go you dont get much more unusual than this. The whole prison complex surrounding the Malmaison hotel was redeveloped in 2006 and now the hotel is a centre piece to a leisure area that includes a number of pizza restaurants, bars and shops as well as the Oxford Unlocked visitor attraction. It is also a five minute walk to the city centre and railway and bus stations.

Photo of the exterior of the Old Bank Hotel
The Old Bank Hotel provides modern, comfortable and stylish accommodation in Oxford. The building was converted from a former high street bank to form the modern bank hotel and restaurant retaining many of the original architectural features. Located on the High St, the Old Bank was the first hotel to be created in the centre of Oxford for 135 years and offers the best of both the historic old city and is in a great location for exploring the University.

Most of the 42 rooms were created with spectacular views for guests to enjoy Oxford's famous skyline of towers and spires although it has been reported that some of the rooms are quite small. Where possible the original features of the bank have been kept in the new hotel.

The ground floor of the hotel hosts the popular Quod Brasserie. This modern bistro style restaurant normally has a good atmosphere every day of the week and serves fresh modern British dishes from breakfast onwards, the emphasis is on good quality seasonal produce, and an excellent atmosphere.

Cost
Le Manoir, is well what can we say, very expensive, but reputedly well worth it if you feel like spoiling yourself or your other half! To quote the great man himself "Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons is the fulfilment of a personal vision, a dream that one day I would create a hotel and restaurant in harmony where my guests would find perfection in food, comfort, service and welcome."
