Amicus Apple, Edinburgh This super-stylish restaurant has lit up Edinburgh's restaurant scene with its sleek design and classic British menu. The dining room at Amicus Apple is chic and colourful with hardwood floors, cream leather banquettes and bright red walls, and the backlit bar is ideal for pre-dinner cocktails. The service is excellent, and the food reasonably priced. Favourite dishes at Amicus Apple include the warm smoked mackerel and potato salad on crisp little gem to start with; the braised shin of beef, tarragon potato dumplings, carrot and onion puree for main course; and the exquisite raspberry and toffee baked Alaska to share for pudding.

Whighams Wine Cellars, Edinburgh Right off Charlotte Square, down the narrow stairs you'll find Whigham's, an authentic Georgian wine cellar. You'd expect a blistering wine list with a nice line in Champagnes, and here it is, but you wouldn't necessarily expect the fresh, high-quality cooking, emphasis on seafood, that emerges from the refurbished kitchen. Here you'll find starters of heart-stoppingly fresh oysters with raspberry vinaigrette, main course of a justly famous seafood platter, and dessert of renowned sticky toffee pudding. Menu changes daily. The wine cellar ambience is suitably dark, with alcoves, leather and wood, but now there is also a bright and airy eating area. The relaxed atmosphere is smart enough that you could bring your boss and not lose career points. And you'd be hard-pressed to dine so well without blowing the budget this close to Princes Street.

La P'tite Folie, Edinburgh It’s name meaning ‘the little madness’, Edinburgh’s La P’tite Folie is, in many ways, a very sensible dining option indeed. Its quirky set up simply oozes Parisian chic from every floorboard and film poster, with deep red walls and dark wood furniture creating a warm, cosy vibe.
