Bristol Temple Meads is the major rail hub for the south west of England with services running from here to London, Birmingham, the north and Scotland, as well as services to Southampton, Taunton, Plymouth and Penzance. For more information on routes click here to see a rail route map. For international train travel you can also book Eurostar tickets from Paris or Brussels online to connect in London for Bristol. Bristol Temple Meads Station is just a fifteen minute walk from Bristol city centre.
Train fares are more complicated than they need to be in the UK due to privatisation of train companies. If you just turn up at the station without booking a ticket you are likely to pay more than double what you need too. To get the cheapest train fares it is better to book in advance and travel during non-peak times.
If you purchase your tickets online, you can either have them sent to you or collect them from the automated ticket machines at Bristol Temple Meads Station, just remember to bring the credit or debit card you booked them with to the station.
The station itself is an impressive bit of architecture, dating from 1840, designed by the famous British engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel as the terminus for his Great Western Railway from London. Despite the station's history it has a modern interior with a shop selling magazines and refreshments, a coffee shop, a pasty shop as well as waffle shop (beneath the platforms) for those with time to snack. The ticket office is open from 07:00 to 22:00 Monday to Sunday or you can also call customer services on 08457 000125. Unusually for a large station there are no left luggage facilities
Manned ticket offices are open Monday to Saturday 04.30 to 22.30 and Sunday 07.00 to 22.30. The station also has machines for advanced tickets available 24 hours a day.
If you are the forgetful type, there is a lost property office which is open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:45, Saturday 09:00 to 15:45 and Sunday 10:00 to 17:45. If you have any questions you can call them on Tel: 08457 000125 during opening hours.
