Welcome to Bath

Bath is a small city in the south west of England in the county of Somerset about 100 miles west of London (160km). It was originally founded by the Romans in the valley of the River Avon who were attracted by the naturally occurring hot springs. The Romans were the first to have the idea of building hot baths around the hot springs, but later during the Georgian era it became a very popular spa resort once again and underwent rapid expansion. Some of Bath's finest architecture was built during this period from from the local, yellow coloured Bath Stone. Even to this day there are strict local building regulaitions that ensure that new building are built with this stone, in keeping with the historic buildings.

The city was designated a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is now a major tourist attraction for visitors to the UK. It is well connected to the rest of the UK by train and bus. The nearest national and international airport is Bristol International which is about 20 miles (32km) away. When travelling to Bath from London and other parts of the United Kingdom you will most likely be travelling by bus or by train. Most major bus routes will take you into Bath bus station. If you are travelling by train, Bath's station is very centrally located and is on the main line between London and Bristol.
